Vice President of Engineering

Block Engineering (metro-west Boston), developer of laser-based spectrometer systems and process gas analyzers seeks Vice President of Engineering to lead all development efforts of Block’s Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer products, including process analyzers for the oil and gas industry, security products for protection of critical infrastructure, laser sources for research, and specially designed laser modules for OEM customers. Ideal candidate will have extensive systems engineering experience spanning electronics, embedded software, optics, spectroscopy and/or lasers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Management of the New Product Introduction process and development of technical risk management processes.
  • Program management and engineering execution across multi-disciplinary teams, including opto-mechanical, electro-optical, electronics, and software engineering teams.
  • Strategy development in collaboration with other departments towards the overall corporate product and technology strategy.
  • Leadership position to ensure technical innovations are explored and implemented into the products in order to increase their market competitiveness.
  • Design for Manufacturing/Assembly process in collaboration with Manufacturing and strong leadership towards cost cutting efforts to increase product margins.
  • Technical leadership towards the further development of a technical and product roadmap.
  • Leadership position to address engineering changes and corrective actions in order to improve product quality.
  • Leadership position towards product certification for hazardous and industrial environments operations.
  • Close interaction with Sales/Marketing organization to ensure proper development of product requirements and establishment of engineering specifications.

The candidate shall have the following background:

  • BS in Physics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other technical degree required. MS or PhD preferred.
  • At least 15 years of engineering work experience, with at least ten years in an engineering management position.
  • Strong systems engineering experience, including experience with optical instrumentation incorporating several of the following: advanced electronics, embedded software, optics, spectroscopy and/or lasers.
  • Experience developing and commercializing field-based instruments that operate in an industrial environment would be ideal.
  • Experience with signal processing or detection algorithms would be helpful.
  • Demonstrated self-starter with ability and desire for a fast-paced multitasking environment.
  • Excellent communications skills and proven ability to work across department to achieve goals.
